Getting started with your AI chatbot: first source to live site
To get started with AI Chatbot, add one knowledge source (your website, a file or a written answer), test the assistant in a private preview, then publish and paste one line of code so the chat widget appears on your site. It all happens in a four-step setup, and you can finish in one sitting if you already have your site address or documents handy.
What do you need before you start?
One of these is enough:
- Your store or product page address.
- A PDF, DOCX, TXT or CSV file with a price list, policies or common questions.
- A few answers you type yourself, such as shipping and returns.
Jot down the 10 questions customers ask most so you can test with them later.
How do you set up the assistant from scratch?
- Add your first knowledge source. On the "What it knows" step, paste your address into "Store or product link" and click "Import store info". If you have no website, choose "Upload a file" or "Write an answer" instead.
- Wait for the source to show "Ready". A large site is read gradually, and you can already test with the pages that are done.
- Test the assistant in the "Try it" panel on the right, as described below.
- Set the name, tone and language on the "How it sounds" step.
- Add the chat to your website on the "Where it replies" step: click "Add to site", create an install code and paste it into your site.
- Choose how conversations reach your team on the "When to hand off" step, then click "Publish".
- Open your website and send a question the way a customer would.
Click "Save and exit" whenever you like, and the setup reopens on the step you left.
How do you test the assistant before customers see it?
Ask what a customer would ask, typos and shorthand included, such as "do u ship intl?", "medium in stock?" or "return window". Then compare the reply with this table:
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A correct answer with a "Source: ..." line | The knowledge source is working | Click "Looks right" |
| A wrong or outdated answer | The data is wrong, old or vague | Click "Fix answer", type the right text and save |
| The assistant says it has no information and offers to pass it to the team | Knowledge is missing for that topic | Add a source or write an answer, and the topic appears under "Missing" |
After you save a fix, the assistant re-answers the same question with your text. For writing data that produces sharper answers, see writing good knowledge.
How do you put the chat widget on your website?
The chat appears only on the websites you list:
- Under "Which websites will show the chat?", enter one address per line, such as
shop.com. - Add
*.shop.comto cover addresses likewww.shop.comtoo. - Copy the line of code shown and paste it just before
</body>on every page. If you cannot edit the site yourself, send the line to whoever manages it. - Adjust the greeting, colour, bubble position, name and email form and opening hours under "How the chat looks and works".
The chat starts answering visitors once you click "Publish". The same step also connects Facebook Messenger, Shopee Chat and TikTok Shop, listed on the integrations page.
What should you do after publishing?
After you publish, edits on the Assistant page apply to live chats immediately. Three things worth doing in the first week:
- Open the Inbox to see what customers ask and how the assistant replies.
- Open "Improve answers" and write answers for the questions it could not handle.
- Set up handoff to your team so customers who need a person are not left waiting.
What will the assistant not do?
- It does not answer beyond what you added. When data is missing it says it has no information instead of guessing.
- It does not create or confirm orders or take payment. It walks customers up to the order step or passes ready-to-buy customers to your staff.
- A source labelled "Sample" is only example content. Replace it with your real policies, because publishing needs at least one real source.
To watch the assistant answer before you set anything up, chat with the demo or browse the features.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a developer to add the chatbot to my website?
No coding is needed. You paste one line of install code into your site just before the closing body tag on every page. If someone else manages your site, send them that line.
Can I still change the knowledge after I publish?
Yes. Edits on the Assistant page apply to live chats right away, and new knowledge reaches customers once it has finished processing, with no draft stage. Test the related question in Try it before making a big change.
Do my test messages show up in my Inbox?
No. Messages in the Try it panel are visible only to you and stay out of the Inbox and your reports. Each test answer still uses that month's AI credits, and once they run out you cannot keep testing.
Can I test before my whole website has finished importing?
Yes. As soon as the first usable page or product is ready, you can test with what has been read while the rest keeps importing. Answers may improve as more content comes in.
Can I start on the free plan?
Yes. Start on the Free plan and upgrade when you need more knowledge sources or messages. Each plan's limits are listed on the pricing page.
