How we compare

AI Chatbot vs live chat widgets: which one fits your store?

A generic live chat widget routes every message to a person by default, while AI Chatbot answers first from your store's own knowledge and only then hands the chat to a person when it cannot help. For a small store the strongest setup is usually both: the assistant on the front line, your team behind it, in one shared inbox.

How is AI Chatbot different from a generic live chat widget?

A live chat widget is a chat box, usually on your website, where each message lands with an agent. Many tools add canned replies, an offline contact form or a simple scripted bot. The underlying model is still "if someone is on shift, the customer gets an answer".

AI Chatbot flips the order. The assistant answers from the products, prices, stock and policies you have added. If it cannot find reliable information, it tells the customer so and passes the conversation to your team rather than making something up. Your staff take over in the shared inbox, then hand the chat back to the AI after 15, 30, 60 or 240 minutes, or by hand. The full mechanics are in the handoff glossary entry.

When is live chat still the better choice?

A person should handle these conversations:

  • Complaints and upset customers. They need empathy and someone with the authority to decide.
  • Large or high-value orders. Buyers negotiate, ask detailed questions and want a named person accountable.
  • Policy exceptions. Anything your documents do not cover.
  • Customers who simply want a human.

AI Chatbot does not resolve complaints, negotiate prices, create or confirm orders, or take payment. Its job is to answer from your store's knowledge, move customers toward placing an order, and hand off at the right moment.

Which should you choose: live chat, AI Chatbot, or both?

A generic live chat widget fits a store that:

  • has enough people online during the hours customers write;
  • gets few messages, most of them personal advice;
  • only needs a chat box on its website.

AI Chatbot fits a store that:

  • gets the same questions about price, stock, shipping and returns all day;
  • is contacted on several channels, not just the website;
  • runs with one or two people who also pack and ship;
  • sees a lot of traffic late in the evening or in sales peaks.

It depends when your product and policy information is vague or changes daily and nobody keeps it current. The assistant will then answer poorly and your team will absorb many handoffs, so fix the knowledge first or keep live chat until the answers settle. If every customer needs a custom quote, most of the work stays with people either way.

How to combine them: assistant first, person next

  1. Add your store knowledge from your website, PDF or DOCX files, or written answers, and test it in the private preview before customers see anything.
  2. Choose when to hand off: whenever the assistant is unsure, only when the customer asks for a person, or never.
  3. Keep email alerts on (they are on by default) so you know when a customer is waiting for a person.
  4. Staff open the Inbox and press Take over, then reply directly. The Inbox has assignment, tags, internal notes and saved replies.
  5. Hand the chat back to the AI when done: after 15, 30, 60 or 240 minutes since the last staff reply, or with Hand back now.

Picture a customer writing at 11 pm: "Is the 500 ml bottle in stock, and how long does delivery to Sydney take?" The assistant checks stock and your shipping information and replies at once. The next morning the same customer writes: "My order arrived damaged, I want to talk to someone." The chat moves to your team, and the agent replies with the whole earlier conversation in view.

Frequently asked questions

How is AI Chatbot different from a live chat widget?

A generic live chat widget sends every message to a person by default. AI Chatbot answers first from your own store knowledge, and when it cannot answer it says so and hands the chat to your team instead of guessing.

Can I run AI Chatbot alongside human live chat?

Yes. Staff take over a conversation in the same shared inbox and hand it back to the AI after 15, 30, 60 or 240 minutes, or manually whenever they like.

Will a chatbot replace my live chat agents completely?

No. Complaints, price negotiation and policy exceptions still need a person. AI Chatbot also does not create or confirm orders or take payment on your behalf.

What do customers get outside my working hours?

The assistant keeps answering from your store knowledge. On the website widget you can set business hours and an away message so visitors know when a person will be around, and chats that need a person wait in your Inbox.

How does the cost compare with staffing live chat?

They are different models: live chat costs staff time, while AI Chatbot is a monthly plan based on AI credits, conversations and knowledge sources, with a free plan available. Check the pricing page against your own volume.

I already use live chat. How should I start?

Keep your agents. Import your website or documents into AI Chatbot, test answers in the private preview, connect one channel, then set the handoff so your team picks up the chats that need a person.
